The vocabulary trips people up, so here is the honest map. The silo is the oldest of the three: you sort pages into strict thematic folders and keep the internal links inside each folder, sealing the topic off. The cocon sémantique, popularized in France by Laurent Bourrelly, is the most engineered: the internal linking follows a deliberate, intent-driven order, from the mother page down through daughters and sisters, so that link equity and meaning flow along a designed path. A pillar on "heat pumps for old houses" might send spokes to noise, running costs, insulation prerequisites, and available subsidies, one page each.
The linking is the mechanism, not a decoration. Google's own guidance is blunt that internal links help it find pages and understand how they relate, which is why it recommends making them crawlable and descriptive in its documentation on links. What a semantic cluster does not do
Let me be straight about what a cluster will not do, partly because that honesty is itself the kind of signal answer engines reward, and partly because the concept gets oversold.
The honest limits
- It is not a substitute for substance. Group empty pages and you get an empty cluster; the architecture only amplifies real expertise.
