Type a question and, increasingly, you do not scroll a page of ten blue links. A model reads for you and hands back a written answer, stitched from a handful of pages it decided to trust. The passage it kept from each of those pages has a name that is settling into the SEO vocabulary: the AI snippet. This page defines it plainly, separates it from the featured snippet and the AI Overview it gets confused with, shows how an engine actually picks the passage it quotes, and explains what makes a page the source that gets cited rather than the source that gets skipped.
AI snippet, defined in one line
An AI snippet is the short passage an AI answer engine, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, lifts from a web page to build and source its answer. It is the unit of content the model keeps and cites, at the level of the paragraph rather than the whole page. By extension the term also names the answer fragment the AI writes itself, drawn from those quoted passages.
Two ideas in that definition carry the weight. The first is the paragraph, not the page. Classic SEO fought for a page to rank; an AI engine does not quote a page, it quotes a passage. It can pull two clean sentences from deep inside an article whose title it never shows, and ignore a well-ranked homepage that never states a plain answer. So the object you optimize shrinks: it is the self-contained passage, not the URL.
The second idea is the citation. When a model surfaces your passage, it usually attaches a source link, and that link is the whole prize now. Being the AI snippet means the machine chose your words as the clearest available answer and pointed its user at you as the reason to trust it. That is a different, and in some ways harder, thing to win than a ranking.
AI snippet, featured snippet and AI Overview
A featured snippet is Google's boxed answer, lifted verbatim from one page and shown in the classic results. An AI Overview is Google's generated summary, written from several sources at once, above the results. The AI snippet is the general term for the passage any AI engine quotes to build an answer, whether that engine is Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity. Different surfaces, one underlying skill.
The words multiply faster than the ideas, so here is the honest map. Keep three columns in mind and the confusion clears.

How an AI engine picks the passage it quotes
An AI engine rephrases your question into several sub-queries, a technique called query fan-out, retrieves candidate passages across many pages, and keeps the ones that answer most cleanly from sources it judges trustworthy. There is no markup that requests the slot: the lever is a passage clear and well-sourced enough to be the obvious one to quote.
Picture the engine's job. It takes your question, breaks it into the several narrower questions a full answer would need, and searches for a good passage against each one. Google describes this fan-out behaviour and the way its AI features assemble an answer in its own documentation on AI features in Search, and it is blunt on the key point: there is no special tag, no schema, no trick that asks to be cited. The system reads the rendered page like a reader would and decides whether any passage answers cleanly on its own.
This is retrieval, then judgement. The retrieval half rewards pages a machine can parse without guessing: a real heading that matches the question, an answer stated right under it, consistent naming so the model is sure what you mean. The judgement half rewards trust: a claim tied to a named, dated source is safer for the engine to repeat than an unbacked assertion, because the engine, like Google before it, pays a reputation cost when it quotes something wrong. Chasing the slot with tricks fails for the same reason it stopped working in classic SEO. The way in is to be, visibly, the most reliable answer on the page.
Why the quoted passage now decides visibility
Being ranked but unquoted increasingly means being present and unseen: when the answer is written in place, the AI snippet is what the user actually reads. Two forces make this pivotal, a measured drop in clicks when an AI answer appears, and the fact that AI answers are sharpest on the specific, long-tail questions most keyword plans ignore.
The first force is not intuition, it is measured. A reference study, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by teams from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, tested on a benchmark of 10,000 queries what actually raises a page inside a generated answer. The verdict is clear: citing sources and adding statistics lift visibility markedly, while stuffing the page with keywords does nothing at all. Generative engines reward evidence, not repetition, which is the whole strategy in one sentence.
The second force is where our own numbers come in, and it is the one most strategies miss. AI answers are at their best on precise, specific questions, the long-tail queries a person actually types or dictates in full sentences. That is exactly the territory classic keyword planning writes off as too small. Across the 5092 French keywords Cicero Studio analyzed, the long tail dominates: 35% of the French keywords Cicero Studio analyzed get fewer than 100 monthly searches, and across the 4480 French keywords Cicero Studio measured, the median volume is 260 searches per month. Those are not vanity terms, they are the granular questions an AI snippet loves to resolve, and there are far more of them than there are high-volume heads. A page that cleanly answers one real niche question often has a better shot at becoming the quoted AI snippet than a generalist page chasing a big contested keyword.
The reframe. Stop asking only "do I rank?" and start asking "for which questions is my passage the one worth quoting?" That second question maps to how AI answers, and the boxes above them, now actually work.
How to become the AI snippet
To become the quoted AI snippet: answer each question in the first one or two self-contained sentences of the section, phrase headings as the questions people ask, back every claim with a named and dated source, and keep the page clean enough for a machine to parse without guessing. You cannot force the citation, but you can make your passage the obvious one to lift.
None of this is exotic. It is mostly good writing made legible to a machine, and if you already answer questions clearly and cite your facts, you are most of the way there. The habits that matter are few and concrete.
- Front-load the answer. Under a heading that mirrors the question, give a complete answer a reader could screenshot on its own, then expand below it. That opening passage is the one an engine lifts.
- Write headings as real questions. The fan-out mechanic matches your sections to the sub-questions it generated, so headings phrased the way people ask are easier to retrieve against.
- Back every claim with a named source. The GEO study is explicit that cited sources and statistics raise visibility. A passage tied to a real, dated source is the one an engine feels safe repeating.
- Remove ambiguity. Define terms, keep naming consistent, and mark up meaning with structured data such as FAQPage so machines parse intent rather than guess it.
- Target real questions, not just big keywords. The long-tail question you answer fully is often more winnable, and more quoted, than the head term everyone crowds.

The limits of chasing the AI snippet
Let me be straight about what becoming the quoted passage will and will not do, partly because that honesty is itself a signal engines reward, and partly because overselling the AI snippet is how the tactic earns its skeptics.
The honest limits
- It rarely brings the click. A Pew Research Center study from July 2025 found that when an AI summary appears in Google, only 8% of users then click a link, against 15% without one. Being quoted builds awareness more than it sends visits.
- It is not permanent. Engines re-evaluate constantly, and a competitor with a cleaner, better-sourced passage can take the citation tomorrow.
- It cannot be forced. There is no markup, no bid, no guaranteed slot; you can only make your passage the obvious choice.
- It does not stand alone. A page with nothing clear or credible to say gives an engine nothing to lift, so the AI snippet sits on top of genuine expertise, not instead of it.
