AI agent automatically filling an ecommerce cart via Google UCP protocol

On March 19, 2026, Google officially expanded its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with three new capabilities — Cart, Catalog, and Identity Linking — according to an announcement on the official Google Blog. The result: AI agents can now build multi-item shopping carts, query your product catalog in real time, and apply member discounts — all without the user ever visiting your website.

This isn't a minor update. Since UCP launched at NRF in January, it enabled checkout completion from inside Google AI Mode. With these additions, AI agents now handle the entire product discovery phase — not just the final payment. Agentic ecommerce is officially live for retailers.

What Cart, Catalog, and Identity Linking actually do

Cart lets agents build a multi-item basket from a single retailer before the shopper commits. The agent explores, compares, and selects — the user only steps in at confirmation. Think of it as a personal shopper that never sleeps.

Catalog allows the agent to query your live inventory: variants, pricing, stock availability. No more stale product feeds. An agent can check that a size is in stock before recommending the product.

Identity Linking (via OAuth 2.0) connects the shopper's retailer account to the UCP session. Member discounts, free shipping for subscribers, loyalty benefits — all carry over even when the transaction completes inside Google AI Mode or Gemini.

3 platform partners: Commerce Inc, Salesforce, Stripe

For retailers: opportunity or threat?

The question deserves a straight answer. With UCP, Google absorbs part of the buying journey that previously happened on your website. Direct traffic drops. In return, your products become accessible across Google's AI surfaces — AI Mode, Gemini — with zero friction for the user.

Three platform partners (Commerce Inc, Salesforce, Stripe) will lower the technical barrier for retailers without engineering teams. If you're already on one of these platforms, you can integrate UCP without custom development. If you're not, you have a few months to get ahead of this.

The UCP paradox: you lose direct website traffic but gain AI distribution. For brands that relied on classic SEO for ecommerce, this is a paradigm shift. For those who anticipate it, it's a new channel to own.

What to do right now

  • If you use Salesforce Commerce or Stripe: check your platform's UCP roadmap now. Integration is expected "in the coming months" — register for early access immediately.
  • If you have a custom site: read the UCP spec at ucp.dev. Cart and Catalog are in draft but implementable by a competent dev team today.
  • For your product content: UCP agents pull data from Merchant Center. Treat your product descriptions, variants, and stock data as AI-facing content. Quality of your feed directly affects AI visibility.

If you're following Google AI Mode's ad monetization strategy, UCP is the missing transactional piece — it's how Google makes AI Mode profitable without classic search ads.

Cicero's take

UCP isn't a feature — it's infrastructure. Google is building the rails for agentic commerce, and the train is already moving. In 12 months, "your cart was filled by an AI assistant" will be table stakes. Retailers who ignore this today will discover in 18 months that they're no longer in the loop — literally.
